FARM LIVESTOCK AND PETS
This spring 2015, we added registered Dexter cattle to our farm, thanks to our friends at Pointer Ridge Farms in Ironton, Ohio. We purchased 2 bred heifers (Holly and Lily) and a bull (Mac). We plan to use our Dexter cows for milk and meat to feed our family and eventually to help other homesteaders meet their cattle needs.
Dexter Cattle are a small registered breed, not to be confused with miniature crossbred cows. They originated in Ireland and are known for their hardiness and good nature. Dexter cows can produce up to 2-3 gallons of milk per day with 4% butterfat and their meat is lean, tender and as I've been informed, very tasty. Dexter's take up less space and consume less feed than your typical dairy cattle. After extensive research, this is why we have chosen to have Dexter cattle on our farm.

We have also added a Blue Butt boar to our farm thanks to our friends Tim and Mary King. In August we will be adding our pig . We plan to breed our pigs for meat to feed our family and to help supply other homesteaders to meet their swine needs.
A little trivia: a Blue Butt pig is actually a Yorkshire and Hampshire mixed. Blue Butt pigs are pink with underlying black, that is normally on the back, near the rear of the pig which resembles a blue color.
The following pictures are the pets and livestock that we currently have on our farm.
